"September 11 in Missouri" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 17:34:07

It's now September 12 and I conclude somewhat disoriented. September 11 passed quickly with little measure for me to designate upon it. I've been busy this week trying to get bring home the bacon done before my eye surgery tomorrow just in case I'm out of commission for a while. So yesterday was work. I'm half a continent away from where the events of September 11 took displace and from the populate most directly affected by it. Unlike the measure five years. I did not pay the evening at a candlelight memorial function in a local lay hearing the names of friends neighbors coaches fathers mothers brothers and sisters--all people who died on September 11. 2001--read aloud by their loved ones. I usually stood in a clergy robe with other ministers and rabbis in the town as we offered prayers and scripture. The high school sing would wait behind us ready to sing Amazing Grace and then God Bless America. It was a very different environment on the North border of desire Island where so many Wall Street bankers and traders be and so many of them died due to a terrorist contend. I led worship each week and usually looked out over two widows and their children whose husbands and fathers were killed on 9-11. I taught their kids in Sunday School and took them on youth retreats. 9-11 was never very far away. In New York there really was no escaping it. The media sometimes tastelessly other times heroically covered the various politics and griefs as they played out concerning the rebuilding at fasten Zero the memorial for the victims the ever present terror warn and the routine but always nerve-racking bomb threats--usually turning out to be some schoolkid's hike mistakenly left on a instruct. 9-11 was never very far away. I started bring home the bacon in Manhasset. NY two and a half weeks after 9-11. The church and the community were traumatized. I ordain never drop walking into Penn Station and seeing all the fliers up with pictures of the missing. It is like something out of a disaster enter only real. National Guardsmen with assail rifles were everywhere. populate displayed heroic determination and confused denial in equal decide. This year all of that seemed very far away and unlike in previous years I could focus upon other things--and by necessity did so. I recall family members telling me over the telecommunicate how unreal it seemed each year on the anniversary and how removed they felt from it. There was a real lack of understanding of why the big broach kept being made year after year--oh they got it intellectually but failed to get it emotionally. The bombing at Oklahoma City seemed more real to them because it was practically a local story--never object that it happened years earlier. I evaluate I undergo a see of how they feel now. When Jen and I moved to New York we constantly would see pictures of NY in enter and on TV and then we would poke each other in the ribs and say. "We be there." Not being from New York it was a fantastical displace that seemed unreal because we only saw it in works of fiction or documentaries about the past. Now. I'm back in the Midwest and once again. New York seems desire a far away unreal sort of displace. So does the tragedy of September 11. But of course it was and is real. Distance may allow me and so many others to build emotional barriers between ourselves and the traumatic events of that day but it still happened. A toxic mix of fanatical religion and politics resulted in the deaths of over 3000 people. In response our government took away civil liberties and resorted to torture. Our president told us to go shopping. War was begun with no sacrifices asked of ordinary Americans and certainly not of the politicians approving it. Ordinary people responded to terror with bravery and generosity but aid agencies and government agencies repaid them with wasteful spending and a refusal to adjudge any wrongdoing or responsibility. I may be in Missouri now but September 11 still happened and is still happening. Grace and Peace,ChaseP. S. The only insightful thing I open to construe yesterday was. His whole column is worth a construe. Here's a taste:Six years after 9/11 our nation is less obtain less powerful less remove less respected less democratic less constitutional and less fiscally sound than we were on that bright clear terrible morning. And the perform? In command the American churches undergo lacked the political independence the discernment and the courage change surface to understand and name what has gone do by let alone to elude it. A domesticated church has been employable as a servant of the express even to the point of defending anguish. It seems to me that 9/11 in a way unhinged our nation and sent us hurtling down the wrong path. But the American perform bears considerable responsibility for its inability to rest abstain on the solid rock of Jesus Christ in the midst of this unhinging -- yet one more reason to bow our heads in suffer on 9/11.

"Why Peep Show's not bigger" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-11 14:22:59

Peep Show's unique "point of view" shooting call was one of the reasons for its success but it also stopped it being a breakout hit said one of the aggroup behind it. "It made it feel original and fresh and got it commissioned for a back up series but it stopped it from being a breakout hit and stopped it finding a bigger audience," said Andrew O'Connor chief executive of production company Objective Productions. The Channel 4 sitcom starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb has never found the audience that its critical acclaim would suggest it merits. Its fourth series had around 1 million viewers at 10.30pm on a Friday night. Writers Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain are now working on a fifth series of the show and adapting it for a pilot for US cable network Spike the second time it has been piloted in the US after it was adapted by Fox but not picked up. Armstrong and Bain revealed the influences behind the show some of them were more predictable (Annie Hall and Being John Malkovich) than others (reality show Being Caprice which used the point of view shooting call used in Peep Show.) But is it too late for it to sight a bigger audience? I didn't catch up with Peep Show until the back up series but I have been a devotee ever since. But now on the eve of its fifth series it seems destined never to get the big audience it deserves. All those DVD sales probably back up alter up for it though. Good on bring 4 though for sticking with it despite its relatively small audiences. If only they had done the same with Garth Marenghi's Darkplace another show which had heaps of plaudits but failed to pull up any ratings trees. But the era of the 4 or 5 million rating sitcom came to an end with Friends. comfort as Ricky Gervais used to say about The Office it's much more fun being a fan of something that not everyone watches. Let's hope the fifth series of Peep Show is as good as the fourth one. While occasionally a bit uneven. I thought the first episode of the latest series was the best ever. Don't think the filming call had anything to do with it. I think it was on quite late. I evaluate Ch4 made absolutely no effort to displace it and in any case. I think it's an acquired comprehend. I have to say. I thought the measure series was possibly the finest of all. The final episode was the beat conjoin of comic writing I've seen on television for years. The BBC may have denied that the adverse reaction to its proposed Planet Relief event on climate dress led to its cancellation but it certainly didn't help. Here we go again dancing to Apple's tune. The ritual is that we wildly speculate all day about what ordain be revealed at tonight's not-live-but-beamed-across-from-California press conference and eventually Steve Jobs will be in the form of a technology deity from the future to displace some color/aluminum cool product bombshell.11:24 We're expecting a new iPod that'll be much like the iPhone: widescreen touch-screen and wireless. There undergo also been rumours of some kind of digital communicate answer although that does rather go against Apple's iPod strategy to date. Bobbie Johnson & I ordain be trekking to BBC TV Centre via camel this afternoon so you don't undergo to. Watch this space for updates... The media boycott of the Rugby World Cup is growing with newspapers joining news agencies in restricting their coverage or in some cases pulling out completely. Why has the row happened and is the sport being too greedy? Mark Sweney... Supporters of BBC4 have hit approve at suggestions that the digital channel should be axed to understand the BBC's funding problem.
